Chiropractors can help you reduce headache pain–or even eliminate it!

Do you find yourself missing work or skipping out on social events because of your persistent headaches? While it may seem like long-term relief is impossible, the chiropractors at Legacy Chiropractic can help you find the solution you need.

Headaches are the most common source of pain, and virtually everyone will experience a headache at some point or another. Not all headaches are the same: while some may only consist of a mild twinge, others may be completely debilitating and accompanied by nausea or light sensitivity.

Persistent or recurring headaches, in particular, can disrupt daily life. It often feels like they strike at random. In truth, though, all headaches have some sort of cause. In many cases, the neck and spine are the culprits, which means the chiropractors at Legacy Chiropractic are well-equipped to provide long-term pain relief.

You don’t have to live with persistent, painful headaches. Request an appointment with our chiropractic clinic to learn more.

The different types of headaches

Experts generally classify headaches into four basic categories:

  • Migraines consist of throbbing pain on one side of the head, usually accompanied by light or noise sensitivity
  • Tension headaches consist of pain around the band of the head
  • Cluster headaches consist of a series of painful headaches that occur for several days in a row (as a cluster)
  • Miscellaneous primary headaches, which refers to any other type of headache not caused by a separate disorder

Of the four categories of headaches, tension headaches are the most common. As the name suggests, tension headaches are caused by tension–contracting muscles in the neck or head.

But what causes those muscles to contract? The answer is any number of things. Most headaches, regardless of category, are brought on by triggers: certain behaviors or emotional states that lead to a headache. Stress, skipping a meal, clenching your jaw, or working too hard can all potentially trigger a headache.

However, one of the more common headache triggers is neck tension. The increase in sedentary lifestyles and phone use can irritate your spine and the muscles in your neck, leading to headache pain.

How chiropractic care can help alleviate your headaches

Chiropractic is an approach to healthcare that focuses on the spine’s alignment and the body’s ability to heal itself. Our chiropractors at Legacy Chiropractic use hands-on techniques to reduce pain throughout the body.

The first thing we’ll do is help you determine your headache triggers. Identifying a trigger is vital in treating your headaches at the source. If your headaches are brought on by eating a certain food, for example, you can then work to avoid that food, reducing your headache episodes.

In addition to determining behavioral or emotional triggers, our chiropractors will perform an exam to see if there might be any physical causes for your headaches. We’ll check reflexes, sensation, muscle strength, and spinal alignment and determine if specific movements might help reduce your pain.

Once we’ve determined the cause of your headache, our chiropractors can offer several different treatment options to address your specific triggers. Here are just a few of the treatment options we can provide:

Spinal Adjustments: Regular spinal adjustments can play a big role in managing and preventing headaches. An adjustment reduces muscle tension in your neck and back, counteracting the effects of a sedentary lifestyle and helping to reduce stress.

Stress Management: If stress triggers your headaches, we’ll show you ways to reduce that stress, such as breathing exercises or self-massage. There’s also a good chance that stress is causing your neck or back muscles to tense up, so a spinal adjustment can also help.

Lifestyle advice: Our chiropractors can provide suggestions to help minimize the effects that prolonged sitting or phone use can have on the body. For example, we can help you set up your workstation more ergonomically and provide you with gentle stretches and postural corrections to ensure you’re maintaining good spinal health.

Regardless of your specific headache triggers, our chiropractors will help you find a solution!
