What Is Range Of Motion?

In order for the body to move correctly, proper range of motion is essential. When your range of motion is inhibited, you may experience pain or discomfort in addition to restricted movement. Range of motion and flexibility are interrelated and ROM determines your ability to move a body part fluently without pain or discomfort. However, it may be severely impacted after an injury or trauma has occurred, or you have been diagnosed with an underlying condition. For example, patients with a rotator cuff injury may lack the ability to move their shoulder and arm in a circular motion. This is because of pain, stiffness, and tension within the muscles.

The good news is that chiropractic can often alleviate chronic pain and prevent these issues from becoming worse.

Types of ROM

There are three different types of ROM: Passive range of motion (PROM), active-assisted range of motion (AAROM), and active range of motion (AROM).

  • Passive range of motion is achieved when an outside force such as a chiropractor or assisted device causes the movement of a joint to its greatest abilities. This method is usually performed when the patient is completely unable to move the body part.
  • Active-assisted range of motion (AAROM) occurs when the joints receive only partial assistance from a chiropractor or assisted device. This is typically performed when the patient requires assistance with movement from an external force because of weakness, pain, or changes in muscle tone.
  • Active range of motion (AROM) is the ROM that can be achieved when muscles contract and relax during joint movement. The active range of motion allows the elbow to bend and biceps to contract, while the triceps muscle relaxes. AROM is typically performed by the patient independently without assistance.

The Chiropractic Solution

Chiropractic manipulations, specific exercises, and stretches may all be able to help you restore movement and improve your range of motion. There are several ways that this can be achieved through chiropractic treatment, including:

Manipulations

A limited range of motion typically occurs because your back, neck, or shoulders are out of their proper alignment. Luckily, a chiropractic adjustment can restore your body’s alignment so it can move the way it’s intended to.

Massage

Massage is an effective way to alleviate tight or inflamed muscles that are causing muscle tension and stiffness. When your muscles are strained, it becomes painful to move in complete motions. Your chiropractor may integrate soft tissue massage in your treatment plan, which helps to loosen things up and improve ROM.

Exercises

Your chiropractor might recommend guided exercises to mobilize your limited joints and promote healthy circulation. Specialized exercises also work to improve flexibility and build strength so your muscles become more resilient. In addition, a healthy increase in mobility can help with future injury prevention.

During your first session at Legacy Chiropractic, our chiropractors will begin with a comprehensive assessment where they will collect details about your medical history, current symptoms, and general health information in order to create a treatment plan that works best for you. Rehabilitation will likely include several of the healing methods listed above. In addition, x-rays and other medical records may be requested from your physician.
